When you need to see a marriage counselor, what kind should you try
to find because trust me they are NOT all the same.
Finding a marriage counselor is easy but finding the right one isn’t.
Here are 4 tips to ensure you will get the best marriage counselor for
you:
1. Know why you seek marriage counseling.
Here’s what I mean: If you and your spouse are aware of the root cause
of the marital conflict, you will be better able to find a counselor who is
most effective at dealing with those issues.
Also, being able to clearly articulate the root cause(s)
when you meet
with your counselor for the first time will get things off to a great start.
2. Choose a counselor you feel comfortable talking to.
This is vital. You must find a person you BOTH feel comfortable with —
someone you know in your heart is trustworthy and will give trustworthy
relationship advice.
Theoretically speaking, if a marriage counselor is on their third or fourth
marriage, how comfortable would you be taking their advice?
3. Credentialed and credible
Try to find a counselor who is highly respected and referred by many people.
4. Shares and supports your
values.
This one is so important.
If you and your spouse have decided to save your marriage no matter
what and have taken
divorce off the table, then don’t see a counselor
who believes divorce is a viable option and insists on keeping it on the table.
Also, if you’re a Christian who believes that marriage should be founded
upon Christian values, then don’t see a marriage counselor who doesn’t
support your Christian value or view of marriage.
You might consider seeking marital counseling from a certified therapist
within your faith community.
These 4 tips can help you find the best marriage counselor for you and
your situation.
Whether you need premarital counseling or need to save a struggling
marriage, be determined to find the
support you need to change
things for the better.
Don’t stop until you find a marriage counselor who can give you the
kind of help that your
relationship needs and deserves.
