A life worth living is a life worth recording (Jim Rohn). The world’s most successful people journal because it allows them to see where they are, where they’ve been and where they’re going.
What if we were that intentional about our marriage?
What if we took the time to record where our relationship is, where it’s been and where it’s headed? After all, isn’t our
marriage the most important venture of our life?
A relationship journal measures the health of your marriage and charts its growth. And it helps you sort through your thoughts and feelings when important matters need to be discussed with your partner.
How to Keep a Relationship Journal:
1. Write your vision and goals (short term and long term) for your relationship.
Where would you like to see your marriage a year from now? Are there any places you’d like to visit with your spouse? Start making a plan to achieve your goals.
2. Review journal entries regularly to know if your marriage is moving forward, backward or stagnating.
3. List prayer requests and when they were answered.
4. Record marital “successes” and breakthroughs to measure what’s working and things that need
tweaking.
5. Important: List everything you appreciate about your spouse. Focus on the good not on the bad as this replaces ridicule with appreciation. (Consider sharing the list with your spouse.)
6. Make a list of your spouse’s preferences and favorite things: food, hobbies, movies, music, etc. to help with planning gifts and surprises.
7. Record any useful information you
receive about marriage. If you’re reading a marriage book, attending a conference or seminar, take notes.
For a balanced perspective on your marriage, journal regularly and not just when you're unhappy. It’d be better to have NO journal than one that is mostly negative that gives you a warped view.
If you’re looking for an easy way to drastically improve your marriage and be a better spouse, consider doing what the world’s most successful people do: keep a journal.
